Art and Artefacts from HMCS Protector

Further to HMCS Protector, South Australia's only colonial warship and Student Survey of the Torpedo Station Site, Hindmarsh Reach, Port River (2000), here are some of the known artefacts from HMCS Protector, and some relevant artwork. Firstly, here is that painting of HMCS Protector steaming off the South Australian coast in 1901: -

These two photos show Captain JCP Walcott RN, Protector's first Commanding Officer, and Protector's ceremonial ship's bell: -



That bell is at the South Australian Maritime Museum. Here are some more photos of it: -

Both the South Australian Maritime Museum and the Port Adelaide Naval Association of Australia clubrooms at 35 Quebec St, Port Adelaide have artwork and artefacts, including this painting of Protector's officers and crew: -

The collection includes various equipment, souvenirs from its Chinese voyage, and the complete journal of Chief Gunner Edwin Argent. That painting of Protector's officers and crew is part of the collection. It is said that the "painting is dated 8 August 1900. On this date, PROTECTOR was engaged in defence activities in China during The Boxer Rebellion".


The collection also includes that painting of "HMCS Protector steaming off the South Australian coast, 1901".

There is a scale model of the Protector in a window display at the Port Adelaide Naval Association of Australia clubrooms at 35 Quebec St, Port Adelaide.


These pages from "The Port Adelaide Sketchbook" by Chris Halls show the six inch breech - loading gun from HMCS Protector that is now located on the foreshore by Semaphore jetty: -

The anchor from the Star of Greece can be seen in the background on the left hand side.


This ship's lifebuoy from the Protector can be seen at the Port Adelaide Naval Association of Australia clubrooms at 35 Quebec St, Port Adelaide: -


Those may well be photos of the Protector in the background.


Meanwhile, Peter Christopher says that a replica of the Torpedo Station is planned as part of the Dock 2 Seaport Village by the Clipper Ship City of Adelaide.
