Captain Hilton Burgess from the Vivid

When I published The Continuing Search for the Vivid online, I soon heard from a colleague who told me that he was a great grandson of Hilton Burgess who was lost when the Vivid disappeared in 1932.

Captain Hilton ("Shaggy") Burgess was one of the three men lost when the Vivid disappeared “9 Apr 1932 - Between Tumby Bay and Pt. Lincoln, South Australia”.

Seamen Reg Evans and E.S. (Ted) Webb were the other two men lost from the Vivid.

The Continuing Search for the Vivid stated that Hilton was a “Part owner with Frickers. From Birkenhead, over forty years old, married with six children”.

“Hilton Herbert Burgess (was) Born in Birkenhead, South Australia, Australia on 13 Jan 1889 to William Henry Burgess (1855 – 1923) and Margaret Mary Parks (1859 – 1935). Hilton Herbert Burgess married Stella May McLean (1893 – 1958)  and had 4 children.”

Stella May Burgess (nee McLean) was born at Glanville in 1893 and died in 1958.

William Hilton Burgess 1919 – 1989

Leonard Thomas Burgess 1922 – 2010

Hilton Aubrey Burgess 1923 – 1998

Alfred John Burgess 1925 – 1993

The details about Hilton's mother?, ‘Margaret Mary Park’ (no ‘s’) at https://www.ancestry.com.au/genealogy/records/margaret-mary-park-24-hfhy5j?msockid=331f0209076164c5007d169106126561 show that Hilton’s mother Margaret Mary Burgess was the daughter of Francis Parks (1831 – 1901) and Catherine Clohesy (1835 – 1918).

She married William Henry Burgess (1855 – 1923), though there appears to be some confusion here.

They had five children, as follows: -

Margaret Mary Burgess - 1883 - Unknown

Hiida (?) May Burgess – 1885 – 1885 (3Weeks Old)

William Harold Burgess -1886 – 1901 (Aged 14)

Hilton Herbert Burgess - 1889 - 1932

Alice Elizabeth Burgess - 1891 – Unknown

So, Hilton had a brother and three sisters, although the three  sisters may have died young, as did his brother William at the age of 14.

The Continuing Search for the Vivid stated that “Shagger”, or “Shaggy” is Burgess’ nickname, and that he is said to have been a part-owner of the Vivid with Richard Fricker. Also, that Hilton’s youngest son Alfred was, for a while, married to ‘Yvonne’. And “Captain Burgess lived in Mary St (at Birkenhead)”.

Alfred and Yvonne also lived at Mary Street, Birkenhead. It is thought that Alfred was also a seafarer and that he and Yvonne had 11 kids (or Yvonne at least did).

This picture of Captain Burgess that I found online via Trove also appears at https://www.ancestry.com.au/genealogy/records/hilton-herbert-burgess-24-6lwmkr?msockid=331f0209076164c5007d169106126561: -
